Stretch Tents NZ requirements
New Zealand owned and operated Stretch Tents manufacturers its Bedouin style tents in NZ and services the events industry – weddings, parties corporate events – offering tents, marquees and canopies of the highest quality, made to the highest standards. With four locations on the North Island and predicated growth spanning the entire country by the end of 2012, Stretch Tents needed to upgrade its company vehicle to one that could meet the demands and needs of the busy, high travel business.
Director Jonathan Tuohey tells the story
“We had a company vehicle – a 4WD Land Rover – but it was getting kind of tired. We were looking to upgrade, and felt we’d like something that would suit the purpose better, such as a ute with a trailer at the back. We need to be able to cart heavy tents far distances. I heard of Driveline through a personal friend, so started by contacting Lance Manins, the Managing Director.”
Parties near and far
With locations in Auckland, Tauranga (servicing the Bay of Plenty), Hamilton (servicing Waikato), and Paihia (servicing Northland), a Stretch Tents vehicle is on the road a lot, and needs to withstand wear and tear while still looking professional. Knowing good quality, late model utes are difficult to come by in New Zealand, Stretch Tents approached Driveline for help sourcing and financing their next company truck.
“I had a bit of an understanding right from the start that leasing would be more tax effective for us, so I didn’t need to be convinced on that point. What I needed, and what Driveline gave me, was some clear parameters on what we could afford and what type of vehicle would best meet our needs.
“Lance began by checking and confirming that we would qualify for finance, which was great. There is really no point in going through the process only to find out later you don’t even qualify. He also gave us some early recommendations on the type of vehicle that would best suit us, based on his experience.
“Step one was Driveline helping to establish our financial parameters. Driveline showed us that by putting X% down as a deposit and paying $X per month, we could get a vehicle between $20,000-$25,000. This was great, as it allowed us to look without going over budget or under-buying.
“When it came time to buy, Driveline actually found the vehicle we ended up buying through an auction website based in Wellington. That is one of the great things about Driveline. They’re not limited regionally, the way I would have been if I’d tried to tackle this on my own.
The dotted line
Due to the seasonal nature of Stretch Tents business, it was some months between their first contact with Driveline and actually purchasing a vehicle. There was, however, no “drop off in service”, tells Jonathan.
“Driveline found us a three-year-old Ford Ranger at an auction site in Wellington. Once we gave the go ahead, they handled the entire bid. The truck didn’t sell at auction, which meant Driveline negotiated our purchase offline and got a cracking good deal. Even with the pick up fee from Wellington, it beat all the Auckland prices I’d found.
“Driveline took the hassle off our hands. We wouldn’t have even known to look in the places they did, let alone where they found our ideal vehicle. We buy a car every five years. This time we paid what the car dealers pay, not what we’re used to as normal folk. That’s what you want. And those cars don’t turn up that often.
“A great thing about Driveline is their professionalism. They were never pushy. We changed our minds a lot, which would have bothered some people – it would have irritated me! But when we were ready, they got the job done very, very quickly.
“I was impressed with the whole process from finding the car to the paperwork, which was all done online. I felt like we’d mucked them around a bit, but when we came to do the deal Driveline handled everything so efficiently and well. That, in a way, impressed me more than anything.”
