Electric And Hybrid Cars

By Lance Manins | Driveline | 16 July 2014 | Posted in Buyer Tips & Tricks, Mitsubishi, News, Nissan, Toyota

For the last 50 years experts have been predicting we’ll all be driving electric cars in the future. It seems that day has arrived, there’s never been a better time to consider an electric or hybrid vehicle.

Decades of investment and development in electric technology has resulted in a number of affordable options for sustainable vehicles in NZ. The green credentials of these vehicles provide good motivation to go electric but it is the cost savings that will keep you smiling.

In a nutshell electric cars can save you a small fortune in running costs. They plug in overnight to charge up the battery which is then used either to power the car 100% or to supplement the petrol engine in the case of hybrids.

There’s a lot of clever thinking at work here and great attention to detail with features like regenerative braking, solar panels and battery charge driving modes. There’s even talk of allowing electric cars to drive in bus and high-occupancy vehicle lanes to encourage their use…

Here’s our selection of the best electric/hybrid vehicles out there:

2014 Toyota Prius C

The Toyota Prius was first launched 17 years ago in Japan and in many respects is the trail blazer of hybrid cars. Since then over 5 million Prius Hybrids have been sold worldwide.

The Prius C Hybrid is powered by a Nickel Metal-Hydride battery and a petrol engine which delivers 3.9L/100Km fuel efficiency and 90g/Km emissions. It’s a stylish 5 door hatch with great features and proven technology.

Available on a SmartLease™ from $567 incl GST per month. No Deposit available to approved purchasers. Read More

2014 Nissan Leaf

You may have seen in the news that the price of the Nissan Leaf has been slashed by almost half making it seriously affordable as a sustainable choice for businesses and individuals alike.

The Leaf has a 100% electric engine powered by an advanced lithium-ion battery, it requires no petrol and has zero emissions. This sporty 5 door hatch plugs into a charging port and has been impressing reviewers with its powerful performance, instant acceleration and superior handling.

Available on a SmartLease™ from $856 incl GST per month. No Deposit available to approved purchasers. Read More

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was released this year and immediately made headlines as the first Hybrid 4WD SUV available in NZ. It’s won several awards including Japan’s Car Of The Year 2013/14 Innovation Award.

The Outlander PHEV XLS is a next generation hybrid vehicle with two electric motors and a petrol engine. It delivers an excellent 1.9L/100Km fuel economy and has very low 44g/Km emissions. Since it’s launch reviewers have called it a “game changer”. It plugs in to any household outlet and reportedly has lost none of its 4WD performance.

Available on a SmartLease™ from $997 incl GST per month. No Deposit available to approved purchasers. Read More
