MG 4 51 kWh Excite: Is it the Best Cheap EV in NZ?

By BW | 27 July 2023 | Posted in MG, Reviews, Smart Deals

As an average Joe on a budget, you probably never thought you’d own an EV. But the MG 4 51 kWh Excite may prove you wrong. From just $599 per month +GST for the next two weeks, this little EV hatch is now the most affordable electric car in New Zealand.

My first spin in the MG 4 51 kWh Excite felt like sneaking into a luxurious nightclub wearing daggy sneakers and a hoodie. I expected to get bounced, but instead I was welcomed inside this sleek electric vehicle.

On looks alone, the MG 4 turns heads with its sporty proportions and snazzy 17-inch alloys. The interior is just as slick, with a massive 10.25-inch touchscreen and digital driver’s display putting more expensive cars to shame.

Settling into the cockpit, the 6-way adjustable driver’s seat felt instantly comfortable, like a favourite old jumper. All the controls fall easily to hand, and the cabin design has a straightforward, no-nonsense vibe.

Hitting the road, acceleration was spritely as we zoomed away in total silence. The instant torque of EVs still blows me away. I expected clunky, but the MG 4 is smoother and peppier than most petrol runarounds I’ve owned.

Gliding through traffic and darting into gaps, this electric hatch handles city streets with nimble ease. The turning circle is as tight as a toddler’s hug, making parking and three-point turns a cinch.

Cruising the motorway, road noise is minimal and the ride keeps its composure. The MG 4 soaks up bumps without rude jolts invading the cabin.

Through twisting backroads, the chassis proves playful and poised. Hitting curves with enthusiasm, the MG 4 holds its line neatly without feeling floaty or disconnected. The steering has a nice natural heft, providing a reassuring sense of control.

After a week commuting, shopping and hitting my favourite winding detours, I am stunned by how normal yet enjoyable living with an EV can be. The MG 4 makes zero-local-emissions driving accessible to average Joes.

Speaking of emissions, I was blown away by how little ‘fuel’ this car uses. Over 500km I averaged just 15kWh per 100km, whereas a comparable petrol hatch might guzzle 6L/100km.

Here’s what that means in terms we average Joes can understand…

For every 100km travelled, it costs just $3.16 for the MG 4 51 kWh Excite (at the national average rate of $0.211/kWh according to MBIE data on 15 May 2023) compared to $16.16 for a comparable petrol hatch (at an average per litre cost of $2.694 according to Gaspy data on 27 July 2023).

Don’t bother whipping out your calculator to work out the energy cost savings because I just did it for you… the MG costs a whopping 80% less to run!

Charging at home is simple using the standard 3-pin socket. A full charge gives you over 300km of driving range, enough for a week of suburban commuting and errands. For longer trips, rapid charging tops up the battery quickly.

Now the downsides – with a compact EV hatch, rear seat and cargo space is tighter than bigger sedans and SUVs. The MG lacks flashy luxury features, but it nails the basics and driver enjoyment. For such a low monthly payment, this car overdelivers.

After my week with the MG 4, I was gutted having to return it. The cheeky styling and zippy driving makes everyday commutes fun. It may be the cheapest EV on the market, but it brings a grin to my face.

For young urbanites, small families, delivery drivers, and penny-pinchers like me, the MG 4 51 kWh Excite is a revelation. It offers reliable electric motoring with zero tailpipe emissions at a crazy affordable price.

Driving the future shouldn’t be a luxury reserved just for the wealthy few. The MG 4 makes electric mobility attainable for everyday Joes. Now we can all cruise eco-friendly, in style and on a budget.
