Everything You need to know about the NZ EV Rebate & Clean Car Discount

By Lance Manins | Driveline | 16 March 2022 | Posted in Buyer Tips & Tricks

The Clean Car Discount is a government initiative that aims to reduce the CO2 emissions of light vehicles in NZ. The main goal of the EV rebate (clean car discount) is to make electric vehicles, hybrids and low CO2 emitting vehicles more affordable for Kiwis.

Clean Car Discount Eligibility – 1 July 2021 to 31 March 2022

The Clean Car discount began on July 1 2021 and will run (in its current form) until 31 March. During this time buyers of new and used EVs and PHEVs will receive a rebate after their new vehicle is registered in NZ for the first time.

Clean Car Discount Eligibility – From April 2022

Subject to legislation being passed, from April 2022, the clean car discount (rebate) will be based on the specific CO2 emissions of vehicles. Vehicles with low or no emissions will be eligible for the EV rebate, whereas high emission vehicles will be charged a fee. This will extend beyond just EVs and PHEVs, but to petrol and diesel vehicles with low CO2 outputs.

Are any electric vehicles not eligible for the EV Rebate?

Some EVs and PHEVs are ineligible for the Clean Care Discount. These include vehicles priced above $80,000 and vehicles with a safety rating of fewer than 3 stars. These safety ratings can be found on the Rightcar website here.

How much of an EV rebate do I get?

Until March 31st 2022, the following EV rebates apply to new and used EVs and PHEVs:

Rebate for New EV: $8625

Rebate for Used EV: $3459

Rebate for New PHEV: $5750

Rebate for Used PHEV: $2300

From April 1st 2022 (subject to legislation passing), these figures will change to a sliding scale based on the CO2 emissions of each specific vehicle. This change will include more lower-emission vehicles like hybrids and low CO2 output petrol and diesel vehicles. The amount of the rebate will be determined by the CO2 emissions of each specific vehicle. To check how much of a rebate you can get on your new or used EV, PHEV, Hybrid or low emission vehicle you can use this handy Clean Car Calculator.

How do I apply for the Clean Car Discount?

Once you have purchased your vehicle and the vehicle has been registered to you, you can apply online for your clean car rebate.  Simply complete the application form and supply the following documents:

–          The vehicle number plate

–          A copy of the sale agreement

–          Your bank details
