Includes 2026 RUC rates ($76/$38) + $12.44 NZTA online admin fee per 1,000km.
Calculated using real-world consumption: 8.5L/100km (Petrol) vs 18kWh/100km (Electric).

How to Use This Calculator

Getting an accurate comparison between petrol and electric in 2026 requires more than just a guess. Follow these four steps to see your true potential savings:

1

Set Your Annual Mileage

The NZ average is roughly 12,000km, but many commuters do 20,000km+. Use the slider to match your actual driving habits. The more you drive, the faster an EV pays for itself.

2

Match Your Local Pump Prices

Petrol prices in New Zealand are currently volatile, ranging from $3.15 to over $4.00 in some regions.

  • Check your local station: Move the slider to match what you’re seeing at the pump today.
  • Test a “Crisis” Scenario: Use the $4.00 button to see how much an EV shields you from future fuel price spikes.
3

Review Your Power Plan

While the national average is 39.3c per kWh, your specific plan might be much cheaper.

Off-Peak Charging: If you have an “EV Plan” or “Hour of Power” where you charge overnight for 15-20c, adjust the slider to see your savings double.
4

Factor in the “New Reality” (RUCs)

Select your vehicle type to automatically apply the latest March 2026 Road User Charges:

  • BEV (Full Electric): Includes the $76.00 per 1,000km rate.
  • PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid): Includes the reduced $38.00 per 1,000km rate.
  • Admin Fees: Our logic automatically adds the $12.44 NZTA online fee to ensure the numbers are grounded in reality.

For Business Owners & Fleet Managers

If you are running a business, the savings are even more pronounced. By switching to a Driveline SmartLease™, you can:

Claim GST

Reclaim 15% GST on your RUCs and electricity, effectively lowering your daily operating costs.

Tax Benefits

Lease payments are typically 100% tax-deductible, helping you manage your business’s taxable income.

Risk Management

Protect your capital and beat inflation by locking in fixed monthly costs as fuel and RUC rates climb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really have to pay RUCs if I buy an EV? +
Yes. As of early 2026, all light Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) pay $76.00 per 1,000km, and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) pay $38.00. These are usually bought in “units” via the NZTA website.
What about the admin fee? +
Every time you buy RUC units, there is a transaction fee. We have factored the $12.44 online fee into our “Weekly Savings” calculation, assuming you buy 1,000km at a time to keep your costs transparent.
Is it better to get a Hybrid or a full EV? +
Full EVs (BEVs) offer the highest energy savings, especially with petrol over $3.30. However, if you frequently do long-haul trips where charging is inconvenient, a PHEV ($38 RUC) can be a great middle ground for flexibility.
