Know Your P.H.E.V’s H.E.V’s & B.E.V’S

By Lance Manins | 30 November 2021 | Posted in Buyer Tips & Tricks

Do you know your P.H.E.V’s H.E.V’s & B.E.V’s that we are constantly hearing about ? as there seems to be some confusion out there. We take a look at whats available in the Low to Zero emission car scene.

WHATS A P.H.E.V

Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicles – These have an electric motor and a conventional petrol powered engine. The car uses the electric motor for a set percentage of its overall operating range with the petrol engine kicking in when required for high load or additional range requirements. The battery is charged either through its petrol engine re charging the battery banks or by plugging it in overnight.

One of the reported big benefits with PHEV technology is the reduction in range anxiety as if the battery ran out then you have the backup petrol engine to fall back on and you have increased flexibility in what you do with the vehicle. It gives you the best of both worlds you could say. The negative is that you are still producing emissions !

Whats A B.E.V

B.E.V stands for Battery Electric Vehicles and is frequently just called “E.V “. They are powered solely by an electric battery and there are no gas engines within sight ! … . Most B.E.V’s are capable of pretty fast charging these days and are 100% emissions free. There have been huge technological developments in E.V’s over the last decade with big improvements in the battery technology and as such the increases in range available with the latest vehicles has led to the lowering of  range anxiety with potential owners.

Whats a H.E.V

Hybrid Electric Vehicles have both a gas powered engine and an electric motor to drive the vehicle. Battery energy is developed from regenerative braking which recoups otherwise lost energy in braking to assist the petrol engine during acceleration. In a traditional engine this braking energy is otherwise lost as heat in the brake pads and rotors. You cannot charge a H.E.V vehicle as you can with an EV.

If you want to know more about how to fund or lease a new PHEV, HEV or BEV then give the team at Driveline a call on 0800275374 or check out the great range of vehicles on line here
